Notes from the Field: NY Art Book Fair
Last weekend, Yale University Press joined over 200 other exhibitors at the 6th annual NY Art Book Fair, presented by Printed Matter and situated throughout Long Island City’s extraordinary MoMA PS1. From the Fair’s opening on the evening of Thursday, September 29th straight through to its end on the evening of Sunday, October 2nd, people flocked to the museum. Our sense of the crowd was that it was an interesting mix of art school students, media, artists, book designers, collectors, dealers, gallerists, members of the east-of-the-East-River art scene, and others who were simply drawn to the wonderfully lively atmosphere; there was music, beverages were served, and there was just so much to see. Conversation was constant, and the overall mood was bright and full of energy.
Here’s a shot of the Yale table just before the start of the fair:
And before-and-after shots of our last exhibit copy of Houdini: Art and Magic by Brooke Kamin Rapaport performing an escape (actually, purchased by an eager Houdini fan):
In addition to the major art book publishers exhibiting at the Fair, there were museums, magazines, galleries, schools, nonprofit art organizations – and there was an entire tent set up outdoors that housed scores of zine creators and publishers.
These birds were there, as well, promoting the idea of recycling and reusing… there were books lining the birds’ cage.
