Notes from the Field: ACE Awards 2011
On the evening of November 16th, the Directors and Trustees of Art and Christianity Inquiry held the ACE Awards at the Bishopsgate Institute in London. One of the three awards presented was the ACE/Mercers’ International Book Award, with the goal of selecting “the book that makes an outstanding contribution to the dialogue between religious faith and the visual arts.” Of the 5 shortlisted titles, we are proud to announce that 4 issued from Yale University Press:
T.J. Gorringe, Earthly Visions: Theology and the Challenges of Art
Marcia B. Hall, The Sacred Image in the Age of Art
Margot E. Fassler, The Virgin of Chartres: Making History through Liturgy and the Arts
Aden Kumler, Translating Truth: Ambitious Images and Religious Knowledge in Late Medieval France and England
According to the presenter, Eamon Duffy of the University of Cambridge (and also a Yale author), there was much to recommend for each of these titles—wide ranging intellectual inquiry, scholarship of the highest rank, and beautiful production quality (Duffy cited Aden Kumler’s book as the most beautiful book of the competition). In the end, Margot Fassler’s book was chosen as prize winner.
We send congratulations to Professor Fassler and to all of our authors whose publications were shortlisted for this award. We also extend our thanks to ACE for hosting this important event.
