Get a Good Read on Your Running Mate

After Senator John McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential running mate for the 2008 Republican Party presidential ticket, there was quite a bit of media speculation and excitement surrounding Mitt Romney’s announcement of Paul Ryan as his running mate in August. But the last two presidential elections are hardly the only recent examples of increased public and media scrutiny of vice-presidential candidates. Joshua Glasser‘s The Eighteen-Day Running Mate: McGovern, Eagleton, and a Campaign in Crisis recounts the events of the 1972 US presidential election, in which Democratic candidate George McGovern selected Thomas Eagleton as his running mate, only to remove Eagleton from the ticket a few weeks later after emerging reports of his history with depression and electroshock therapy.

Following Glasser‘s interviews with NPR’s Weekend All Things Considered  and inclusion on Melissa Harris-Perry‘s #nerdland summer reading list, Yale University Press is sponsoring a Goodreads Giveaway until October 22; perfect for the political junkie as this year’s election cycle comes to its climax.  Enter now with your Goodreads account to win, and in the meantime, you can read a free book excerpt from The Eighteen-Day Running Mate on Salon.com or read our interview with Glasser on the Yale Press Log.
