YUP Green Team September 2012 Tip: Office Party Dishes
Today’s severe storm threat in the Northeast has given us reason to think back on the end of summer, when the temperature was a bit warmer, the days slightly longer, and going outside didn’t involve a rubber suit.
To celebrate Yale University Press-style, we held our 2nd annual celebration known as George Parmly Day Day, in honor of our 1908 founder, George Parmly Day. Meeting on our back patio, YUP’s Green Team asked that everyone bring their own glasses and flatware to save on waste at the party.
Speeches and toasts were made with readings from Day’s papers: the proclamation of his retirement from YUP, some of his (amusing) New Year’s Eve poetry was read from a letter to the editor of the Yale Alumni magazine; people posed with our main stairwell portrait of Day, and general merriment filled everyone’s spirits.
And yes, by all means, here is the poem from the letter:
Mother Yale has long been praised,
Let’s give Eli Yale his due.
When five hundred pounds he raised
Yale was made, and history too.
Eli showed his sense and knowledge
Backing Yale as the best college
“Damn the odds,” said Elihu
“Damn the odds,” said Elihu.
Eli placed the world’s best bet
That was soon found to be true,
Had no reason to regret
That he proved himself true blue.
Eli’s words we’ll ever cherish,
Ne’er forget or let them perish,
“Damn the odds,” said Elihu
“Damn the odds,” said Elihu.
