Italian Author Claudio Magris to Tour the U.S.
Italian author and 2001 Erasmus Prize winner Claudio Magris is touring the U.S. this fall to present his most recent novel Blindly, expertly translated by Anne Milano Appel and published earlier this year as part of Yale University Press’s Margellos World Republic of Letters series – a series committed to making the work of outstanding international writers available to an English-speaking readership through quality translation. A captivating and innovative work — or, as Peruvian-Spanish writer Mario Vargas Llosa called it, “[a story] you can read as a novel of adventures” — Blindly tells the tale of a lucid madman, whose single narrative voice is populated by various characters. He is simultaneously Jorgen Jorgenson, the nineteenth-century adventurer who became king of Iceland but was condemned to forced labor in the Antipodes, Comrade Cippico, a communist militant imprisoned for years in Tito’s gulag on the island Goli Otok, and many partisans, prisoners, sailors, and stowaways who have encountered the perils of travel, war, and adventure. Partly confession, psychiatric session, and historical novel, Blindly is the story of a lifetime remembered, invented, falsified, and hidden.
