March Theme: Politics & Current Events

The sun is coming back, fewer mistakes are being made writing out the year’s date, and above all, our publishing wheels and printing presses are working overtime to bring you new books from our spring season.

No doubt you’ve heard a mention or two about the 2012 Presidential Race: With Super Tuesday in March, we’ve released an e-short preview of Richard Hasen’s upcoming Voting Wars: From Florida 2000 to the Next Election Meltdown, though perhaps you’ve already read some reflections on the role of race in elections from The End of Race? Obama, 2008, and Racial Politics in America by Donald R. Kinder and Allison Dale-Riddle. We’ll also take another look at one of Obama’s favorite philosophers, Reinhold Niebuhr, in Charles Lemert’s Why Niebuhr Matters, and efface his twentieth-century thinking with our current political stage.

And as tensions between the U.S. and Iran continue to mount, we’re bringing you more news from Trita Parsi’s A Single Roll of the Dice: Obama’s Diplomacy with Iran, not to mention updates on former senior Clinton advisor Paul Starr’s Remedy and Reaction: The Peculiar American Struggle over Health Care Reform, both with free author interviews in the Yale Press Podcast series.

Only a year after the revolutionary and tumultuous Arab Spring, early previews of Lin Noueihed and Alex Warren’s The Battle for the Arab Spring: Revolution, Counter-Revolution and the Making of a New Era will be available for review; meanwhile, Dilip Hiro contemplates jihadists in South Asia in Apocalyptic Realm, along with current views on politics and religion in Bassam Tibi’s Islamism and Islam and John Bowker’s The Message and the Book, surveying the sacred writings of the major religions of the world and offering a thoughtful introduction to the ideas and beliefs upon which great faiths are built.

In the United States, Women’s History Month is celebrated in March; for our part, we’re planning discussions about Julie Berebitsky’s Sex and the Office: A History of Gender, Power, and Desire, more from Emily Bernard on Carl Van Vechten’s women, and who could forget Melissa Harris-Perry’s Sister Citizen, her new MSNBC show, and our free book excerpt download.

Finally, we’ll have more from Mary Gentile’s Giving Voice to Values, an excerpt from Michael Hirst’s “Eminent Biography” of Michelangelo, and daily doses of publishing and book news. Read along and join our discussions!
